Epicutaneous (patch) test
The epicutaneous test, also called the patch test, is a standard diagnostic method used to identify allergic contact dermatitis. This test helps identify allergens that may trigger skin irritation or inflammation in the patient.
The epicutaneous test is a non-invasive method in which allergens are applied to the patient's skin using special patches. Allergens are substances that frequently cause allergic reactions, including metals, perfumes, preservatives, dyes, and other chemicals found in everyday products. The test is particularly useful for individuals experiencing symptoms such as itching, redness, rash, or skin inflammation, where the cause is unclear.
Testing is performed in multiple steps. The dermatologist first takes a detailed history to identify potential allergens for testing. Plasters containing small amounts of various allergens are applied to the patient's upper back.
The patches remain on the skin for 48 hours, during which time it is important to avoid moisturizing or excessive sweating. Once this time has passed, the dermatologist removes the patches and examines the skin reaction. The final reading is taken after 72 or 96 hours to detect any delayed reactions as well.
The results of the epicutaneous test show which substances triggered an allergic reaction. The reaction can be classified as mild, moderate, or strong, depending on the extent of the skin change. Based on the results, the dermatologist will recommend avoiding specific substances or modifying daily habits.
This test is recommended for individuals with chronic or recurrent skin irritation, those who suspect an allergic reaction to products such as cosmetics, jewelry, or detergents, or those diagnosed with contact dermatitis but are unaware of the exact cause.
After the epicutaneous test, our dermatologist will provide detailed instructions on how to avoid identified allergens and recommend safe products for use. Additionally, a further treatment plan may be suggested to alleviate the symptoms.
