Chemical peels (peeling)
Chemical peels represent one of the oldest and most effective methods of skin regeneration, with a history dating back to ancient times. A chemical peel is a dermatological procedure that uses controlled chemical solutions to remove damaged skin layers, promote cell renewal, and boost collagen production. Chemical peels have been known since the time of Cleopatra, who used lactic acid from sour milk to rejuvenate her skin. In the 19th century, dermatologists began using trichloroacetic acid (TCA) for hyperpigmentation treatments, while in the 20th century, modern formulas with alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHA) were developed, enabling wider and safer applications. Depending on the type and concentration of acids used, the peels can have a superficial, medium, or deep effect, allowing the treatment to be tailored to the client's needs.
Chemical peels address a variety of skin issues, including:
- Hyperpigmentation - such as melasma, age spots, and post-procedure spots
- Acne and oily skin reducing sebum production and unclogging pores
- Wrinkles and fine lines - stimulating regeneration and enhancing skin elasticity
- Uneven complexion and texture - removing dead cells and brightening the skin
- Scars - superficial and deeper peels can help reduce acne or trauma scars
Chemical peels are not recommended in the following situations:
- Active skin infections, such as herpes
- Inflammatory conditions, such as severe acne or rosacea
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Recent exposure to aggressive treatments, such as laser therapy
- Sensitive or very dry skin prone to irritation.
After a chemical peel treatment, the skin becomes smooth, refreshed, and even. Wrinkles and scars appear less visible, while hyperpigmentation gradually fades. The results depend on the type of peel—surface peels offer subtle improvements, while deeper peels deliver more noticeable transformations.
After a chemical peel, the skin becomes more sensitive to UV radiation, so it is essential to use sunscreen (SPF 50+) and avoid direct sun exposure for several weeks. This protection is essential to prevent hyperpigmentation and maintain the results achieved.
Chemical peels are suitable for clients of all ages, depending on their skin condition and specific indications. Surface peels can be performed as early as the teenage years to treat acne, while deeper peels are more common in individuals over 30 to address signs of aging.
The frequency of treatment depends on the type of peel:
- Surface peels - every 2 to 4 weeks
- Medium-depth peels - every 2 to 6 months
- Deep peels - typically one treatment per year or less often.
